Understanding Skintypes

Understanding Skintypes

The skincare industry has always been quick to categorize consumers into particular skin types by presenting products that hydrate dry skin, balance oily skin, or clarify blemish prone skin. But do you really know what this means and how it relates to your own skin? Today, we’re breaking it down!

Dehydrated Skin

Not to be confused with dry skin, dehydrated skin is a condition that occurs because the skin lacks water and has a difficult time maintaining hydration levels. External and environmental factors like diet, weather and stress can lead to itchy, dull looking skin and the sudden appearance of fine lines. When it comes to skincare, the same way your body can be dehydrated from a lack of drinking water, your skin can be dehydrated from a lack of water-rich products! To improve dehydration, avoid washing your face with extra hot water and stick to a comfortable luke-warm temperature so that you're not stripping your skin of its natural moisture. Then, make sure you’re utilizing water-rich topical products to hydrate that complexion — in addition to your usual moisturizers.

Our Coconut Dew Hyaluronic Moisture Cream is an ultra-hydrating, yet lightweight cream that rehydrates skin with coconut water and provides a renewed glow to your skin. Hyaluronic acid penetrates deeply into skin to retain water for maximum hydration and is a beautiful option for dehydrated skin.

Dry Skin

On the other hand, dry skin occurs because the skin lacks oil and is due to a genetic lack of oil-producing glands. This deficiency in sebum means your skin lacks the ability to retain moisture and build a protective moisture shield against external influences. Dry skin appears flaky, cracked and rough, and can feel tight or irritated. One of the keys to managing a dry complexion is regular exfoliation, which removes dead skin cells, allowing oils and moisturizers to absorb more effectively. It’s also important to understand ingredients that can help hydrate and retain moisture.

Our Marula + Cactus Age Defying Face Oil contains a beautiful blend of omega rich Marula, Prickly Pear, and Evening Primrose oils to feed the skin with beneficial fatty acids, defend against free radical damage, and increase firmness and elasticity.

Oily Skin

Oily skin occurs when oil-producing glands are over-producing sebum. Too much of this naturally hydrating substance can result in a shiny or greasy appearance all over, with visible, congested pores and breakouts. To begin balancing oily skin, use a daily cleanser that removes dirt and oil, but doesn’t harm the skin’s natural barrier. Just washed skin should feel soft and hydrated without any tightness. Use a gentle toner to remove excess oil, apply a lightweight moisturizer with the right blend of oils to help balance your natural oil levels throughout the day and enjoy a weekly mask treatment to gently purify.

Our Charcoal + Matcha Detoxifying Face Masque is a wonderful choice for congested complexions, and we recommend enjoying it 2 - 3 times a week. In addition to its many detoxifying benefits, our high quality matcha has the ability to decrease sebum production.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is the most common skin type, and presents as both oily and dry areas. This typically looks like an oily t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) appearing within 20-30 minutes of washing, with dry patches both within the t-zone and on cheeks. It can certainly make your daily skin routine a little more complex as both areas need targeted solutions. Depending on how oily or dry you are in areas, you may need to treat them separately.

Our White Willow Purifying Cleanser is a pH balanced cleanser that leaves skin clean, supple and balanced. In addition to cleansing with a silky, sudsy formula, we’ve included key ingredients that help gently exfoliate, draw out excess sebum, and relieve any irritations while naturally protecting.

Blemish Prone Skin

Blemish prone skin has the natural tendency to develop pimples and is often oily in appearance. There are many factors that impact blemish prone skin, including genetics, hormones, medications and diet. Fortunately, there are many natural ingredients that target, balance, soothe, and treat.

Our Clarity Blemish Treatment is our go-to to heal, treat and reduce breakouts. Black cumin seed oil reduces overactive oil secretions and clogged pores while rosehip oil corrects dark spots while reducing scars. Use as a spot treatment, add to your daily cleanser or enjoy all-over in place of your regular face oil!

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can refer to a range of conditions - from genetic ailments, such as rosacea and eczema, to more severe allergies, and while many people can have a skin reaction at some point or another to a product or ingredient, those with persistent issues are classified as having sensitive skin. For sensitive skintypes, we always recommend patch testing new products to avoid irritation and determine the cause of any reactions. Gaining a better understanding of the ingredients that you are sensitive to and carefully reviewing product ingredients lists are key to choosing the products in your routine.

Our Blue Azul Soothing Cleansing Oil is formulated with a unique combination of skin soothing oils and botanical distillates, including: rosehip oil, blue tansy and horse chestnut which work together to gently remove impurities while easing inflammation and redness.
